A new book, authored by 37 academics from Aston Business School in Birmingham, seeks to provide guidance on becoming a successful lecturer when there are increasing pressures to raise teaching standards in universities.

‘Learning and Teaching in Higher Education: Perspectives from a Business School’, published by Edward Elgar Publishing, offers techniques to enhance teaching practice, focusing on challenges such as large group teaching, increasing attendance and engagement, and successful professional development.

All of the book’s contributors, which include a National Teaching Fellow and numerous Principal Fellows of the Higher Education Academy, have current experience of teaching in a business school, allowing them to offer honest, personal assessments of techniques that are effective in practice.

Caroline Elliott, Deputy Dean of Aston Business School, who co-edited the book, said: “We are thrilled with the publication of this book as it reinforces Aston Business School’s reputation for the quality of its learning and teaching for undergraduate and postgraduate students.

“We’ve been bowled over by the keenness of colleagues to contribute and this attests to their dedication to teaching of the highest quality.

“It’s been a privilege to work with colleagues who have previously written leading text books that are used across the world.”

Commenting on the book, Sally Everett, Vice Dean and Professor of Business Education at King’s College London, said: “This is an essential resource for anyone teaching and supporting learning in a business school.

“The variety and richness of practical approaches, pedagogic reflections and initiatives presented in the context of business and management education is simply outstanding.

“The book is a must-read collection of inspirational ideas and tried and tested approaches that will inspire us all to get more creative in the business classroom.”

The book is available to buy in hardback, as an eBook and on Elgaronline.
