Dr Francesco Zaccardi
An established academic from the Leicester Diabetes Centre has received a prestigious international award for his “outstanding” research on primary care diabetes.
Dr Francesco Zaccardi picked up the Rising Star Award at the 16th International Primary Care Diabetes Europe Conference.
The accolade recognises and celebrates a talented individual who is emerging in the field of primary care diabetes research.
Alongside his research commitments, Dr Zaccardi is a Clinical Epidemiologist and Deputy Director of the Leicester Real World Evidence Unit at the Leicester Diabetes Centre (LDC).
His main interests are epidemiology of cardiometabolic diseases, comparative assessment of glucose-lowering drugs and medical statistics.
Dr Zaccardi said: “I am deeply honoured and grateful to have been recognised with this award.
It is a significant milestone in my career, and I am humbled by the opportunity to contribute to the field of primary care diabetes.
“I am committed to advancing our understanding of diabetes management in primary care settings and improving the lives of individuals living with this chronic condition.”
He added: “This award inspires me to continue my pursuit of innovative research and evidence-based interventions that can make a meaningful impact on diabetes care globally.”
The International Primary Care Diabetes Europe Conference took place in Barcelona from June 15 to 17.
The theme of this year’s conference was ‘New challenges for Primary Care in Diabetes Management’.

LDC is answering the global challenge of type 2 diabetes and long-term conditions through world-leading research, education and innovation.
Based at Leicester General Hospital, the 3,000m2 centre is a unique collaboration between the University of Leicester and University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust.
Founded in 2012, the centre is home to the award-winning DESMOND and EDEN programmes; that ensure the findings of LDC’s innovative research continues to achieve impact beyond the research setting.
