Lanterns to light up night sky at hospice walk

Participants at the St Richard’s Lantern Walk

Glowing lanterns will light up the night sky at a hospice’s memory walk next month.

The sixth St Richard’s Hospice Lantern Walk takes place in the grounds of Croome Court, near Worcester, on Saturday, February 10 from 4.45pm.

Anyone is welcome to take part in the 1.5-mile procession through the grounds of the National Trust’s property, holding lanterns lit in celebration of loved ones.

Sofia Gunster, Community and Events Fundraising Lead, said: “This poignant event has a special place in our hearts as it’s a way for people to pay tribute to the lives of those dear to them.

“As well as the gentle glow of the lanterns, sections of the route will be illuminated to create a memorable spectacle as we walk through the beautiful parkland.

“Anyone can join us to simply enjoy an atmospheric evening walk, or to remember a special person – whether they were cared for by St Richard’s or not.

“We’re so grateful to everyone who takes part and helps raise money for our free care to patients and their loved ones.”

There will be music on the evening, provided by singer Hannah Mac, and the on-site café will be open for drinks and light snacks.

Last year’s event saw 402 people take part, raising £9,005, after costs, towards the hospice’s care for patients with serious, progressive illnesses, their loved ones, and bereaved people.

The Lantern Walk is sponsored by Russell Meers & Gill (Worcester) Ltd Insurance Brokers.

Karen Gill, Director at Russell Meers & Gill, said: “It is a pleasure to sponsor such a worthwhile cause.

“We appreciate, and so will many, the fantastic hard work and care the teams at the hospice give at the most difficult of times.

“It is important to continue raising money to ensure the work of the hospice can continue well into the future.”

Tickets for adults are £20 each, while entry for children aged five to 17 is £15. A family ticket of two adults, two children, or one adult and three children, is £55. Children under five go free.

St Richard’s Hospice is an independent charity caring for adults with a serious progressive illness, improving their quality of life from diagnosis, during treatment to their last days and supporting those important to them.

Each year the hospice team supports more than 3,100 patients, family members and bereaved people in Worcestershire.

It costs £10.28m to run the hospice (22/23 audited accounts), which includes patient care and all the necessary support services.

St Richard’s relies on donations and gifts in Wills for the majority of its income with the remainder funded by the NHS.
