There are many business owners who don’t know a commercial CCTV alarm system works. Here’s an overview of how the alarm system in your business works.

The control panel, keypad and devices

The security alarm system has a control panel that is installed at some point in the place of your business. You can call it the “brain” of the system as it tells the system how to operate. In most cases, the control panel is usually located in an electrical room or in a telephone room.

The keypad is used to check the status of various zones attached to your system. The system can either have an LCD screen for easy use or LED lights to indicate zones. But it will always have a keypad.

These devices detect intrusion when the system is armed. These can be in the form of glass break sensors, beams or other types of devices designed for specific applications. Make sure that proper devices are used for each application as they’ll ensure the safety of your workplace.

Arming and Disarming the system

You can arm and disarm the system with security alarm panel keyboard. This can be done by entering a four-to-six digit security code into the keypad. An access card in conjunction with card reader is used in more advanced systems. When you insert the code in the keypad, the process of arming the system starts. The keypad will start to beep and this process is known as exit delay. This indicates the time you have to exit the building before it is fully armed.

To disarm the system, you need to enter a specific area. It is set by a technician and is the specific amount of time you have to enter your code in order to turn off the zones on your alarm panel. If you’re unable to do this in the specified time or an unauthorized person tries to disarm the system, a signal will be sent to the monitoring station and the system will go into alarm.

Partitioning

The partitioning function allows users to arm or disarms the system in specific areas of their facility. This function finds its application is large warehouses, schools, daycares and many other commercial security applications.

Communications

The monitoring system and alarm panel communicates with each other by using various mediums, such as phone lines, cellular and IP. The addition of a cellular communications module enables cellular communications. This module can either be integral to the monitor or an additional unit. It can be programmed to be considered active or passive. These communication modules send signals to the monitor through the existing cellular networks via 2G, 3G or 4G technologies, depending on the manufacturer of the cellular transmitter.
