Hertfordshire based charity welcomes green fingered volunteers

Sue Ryder Neurological Care Centre Stagenhoe recently welcomed a team of volunteers from international engineering consultants Arcadis. The green fingered group got stuck into some gardening and also generously donated a number of plants for staff and residents to enjoy.

The team have been visiting the centre annually for a number of years, to assist with the gardening and upkeep of the grounds. They have not been able to visit for the last two years due to COVID 19 restrictions so this made the 2022 visit a particularly special one.

Stagenhoe, based in Hertfordshire, provides specialist care for people with a range of neurological conditions such as Huntington’s Disease, Parkinson’s and Multiple Sclerosis. The expert team includes Sue Ryder Nurses, physiotherapists, and healthcare assistants who all work together to support people to live their lives as fully as possible.

The centre is set in stunning grounds and boasts a magical ‘secret garden.’ This wealth of outside space plays an integral part of people’s lives at the centre, allowing residents to enjoy plenty of fresh air and to experience the positive effects of nature.  Activities are often held outside during the summer months, with the gardening club being particularly popular.  Residents help to grow a variety of flowers and vegetables, some of which is used by the centre chefs to create delicious meals.

Sally Davies, Regional Neurological Director, said: “The gardens and grounds at Stagenhoe are such an important part of everyone’s lives here at the centre.  We have a great team who keep the garden and grounds looking fantastic, but to have additional help from volunteers like the group from Arcadis is invaluable.  It was such a pleasure to welcome back familiar faces and for the residents to get involved in the day.

“We have provided specialist neurological care here in Hertfordshire for many years and the ongoing relationships that have developed with companies, both local and global, like Arcadis, is something I am very proud of.

I would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to everyone from Arcadis who came and took part in such a memorable and productive day.”

Gill McCandless, Finance Analyst at Arcadis, said: “We as a team from Arcadis, assisted by SPC Technical & Brace Turner who supplied the plants and compost, are always so happy to assist at the centre, using our Annual Charity Day to help maintain the beautiful grounds.

“It’s so lovely meeting the residents and staff there and everyone is so grateful for the assistance they receive.  Seeing everyone so happy when the plants and flowers are in place is such a sense of achievement. We look forward to the next time we can assist.”
