Health and wellness – Beyond the needle

Sally Wagstaff

When Lichfield Radio launched at the start of the year, Sally Wagstaff didn’t hesitate to step behind the mic.

The local nurse prescriber and clinic owner quickly turned what began as a light-hearted side project, “Wellness Wednesdays,”  into a programme that mirrors what really happens inside her Lichfield consultation room.

To many, aesthetics means injectables and skin treatments. Sally agrees it’s her passion and profession — but insists it goes much deeper.

“I genuinely love aesthetics,” she says. “I love learning, refining technique, investing in training — even when I say I won’t book another course and then promptly do!”

She values the science and artistry. Most of all, she values the confidence boost that well-delivered treatments can bring.

But in her Wade Street clinic in Lichfield, conversations rarely stop at skin.

Sally added: “Appointments often shift to hormones, perimenopause, sleep, stress, gut health, cholesterol, and lifestyle. Skin, she explains, cannot be viewed in isolation. Inflammation, oestrogen decline, cortisol, nutrition, and nutrient absorption all play a role. Treating the surface without addressing underlying factors risks limiting results.

“It’s not unusual for a client to request dermal filler and leave discussing hormone replacement therapy, resistance training, or whether ongoing digestive symptoms need further investigation.”

For Sally, that broader lens isn’t an optional add-on; it’s responsible practice. Sometimes it even means deciding injectables aren’t the right starting point.

That same thinking shapes Wellness Wednesdays. The debut episode featured Rachel from Flo Acupuncture, exploring how therapies like acupuncture can support physical and emotional wellbeing. Upcoming programmes will spotlight reflexology, sports massage, and complementary approaches designed to work alongside conventional medicine — not against it.

Future topics are wide-ranging: environmental “chemical load” in skincare and household products; a “clean but clinical” philosophy using evidence-based formulations without unnecessary irritants; and midlife health, including weight training for muscle and metabolic health.

The schedule also includes Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, inflammatory bowel disease, ME, chronic fatigue, and fibromyalgia. Mental health, cold water swimming, resilience, first aid training, and community support will feature too.

The show actively promotes local charities and practitioners. Wellness, Sally believes, is built collectively, not delivered by one person in a treatment room.

Although her background as a nurse prescriber provides clinical grounding, she practises within clear professional boundaries — offering advice where appropriate and referring when necessary. The move into radio has reinforced what she sees daily: people are searching for calm, credible voices in an overcrowded health landscape.

Whether in the clinic or on air, her message remains consistent. True wellbeing goes beyond aesthetic treatments. It’s about prevention, longevity, resilience, and informed choices.

Wellness Wednesdays airs at 8am on LichfieldRadio.org — honest conversations about health and beauty, going quite literally beyond the needle.
