Generous birthday girl swaps gifts for donations

Isobel Jacobse (Age 10) is raising funds for St Richard’s Hospice

A kind-hearted youngster is asking for donations to the hospice which cared for her grandad – instead of birthday presents.

Isobel Jacobse, who will turn 11 in February, has chosen to raise funds for St Richard’s Hospice to celebrate her birthday – and remember her grandad.

The 10-year-old’s grandad, Norman West from Upton-upon-Severn, had prostate cancer and died at the hospice in July 2019.

Isobel’s mother, Emma Jacobse, explained the idea came up when they were discussing what she would like for her birthday.

“As it had been Christmas so recently, Isobel couldn’t think of anything she needed – which led us on to talking about helping others instead,” said Mrs Jacobse, from London.

“She really fancied supporting the place that had helped grandpa so much in his final stages of life.”

Isobel, who has a sister, is set to have a birthday party with her friends at the end of February and is asking for donations instead of gifts.

She had hoped to raise £500 – but has already beaten that target, with donations totalling more than £600.

Mrs Jacobse continued: “She was incredibly fond of her grandpa and misses him so much. She mentioned the other day it makes her really happy to know she is helping raise money for his special place.

“Grandpa’s motto was always ‘make it happen’ – hence why this is mentioned in Isobel’s little story on her fundraising page ‘making it happen for grandpa’.

“She is very sweet, kind, considerate, and an unbelievably generous soul. We are so proud of Isobel.”

The money Isobel raises will go towards helping the hospice fund its free care to patients with serious, progressive illnesses, their loved ones and bereaved people across Worcestershire.

Rachel Jones, Fundraising Manager at St Richard’s, said: “Isobel’s story is so touching and we are very moved by her kind gesture.

“The funds she raises will help to make such a difference to the lives of those we care for and their loved ones.

“From all of us here at St Richard’s, we would like to say a big ‘thank you’ to Isobel and wish her a very happy birthday!”

St Richard’s Hospice cares for adults with a serious progressive illness, improving their quality of life from diagnosis, during treatment and to their last days. It also supports their loved ones.

Each year the hospice team supports more than 3,400 patients, family members and bereaved people in Worcestershire.

St Richard’s is an independent charity and relies on donations and gifts in Wills for the majority of its income with 22% funded by the NHS.

The hospice is also raising funds for the Build 2020 Appeal and is part way through developing a bigger hospice, enabling more patients and families to be cared for in Worcestershire. The total cost for expanding and redeveloping the existing building in Wildwood Drive, Worcester, is £5.3m.
