Func, a dynamic startup founded by two innovative graduates from the University of Birmingham, is thrilled to announce its next big step in bridging cultural gaps and enhancing UK brands’ visibility on RED, a leading Chinese social media platform. Following their successful enrolment in the University of Birmingham’s Elevate program, the founders are poised to revolutionize cross-cultural marketing.
Func’s mission is to spread Chinese and British culture while amplifying the presence of British brands on RED. This initiative is driven by key insights into the distinct social media habits of Chinese international students, who often do not engage with Western platforms like Instagram or Facebook due to policy restrictions and language barriers. This discrepancy creates a significant gap in marketing strategies between UK brands and the Chinese audience.
The increasing number of Chinese international students highlights the need for businesses to adapt their marketing approaches to be more inclusive and effective. Yet, many UK businesses face challenges such as “Where do we start?” or “What should we post on Chinese platforms?” Func addresses these issues by providing clear, actionable strategies for enhancing brand visibility and digital presence among Chinese international students.
Func is committed to making cross-cultural marketing simple, effective, and enjoyable. In just six months, Func has achieved nearly 7,000 followers on RED, showcasing content that highlights Birmingham’s rich culture, food, and entertainment scene. Func aims to create a space where the Chinese international community can engage with and access the latest events and news in Birmingham.

*Why it is valuable?
Func is not only a marketing agency but also the first to help British brands reach out to Chinese customers based in Birmingham. In 2022, 22.3% of international students in the UK were from China, amounting to approximately 151,690 students. According to a rough estimate by the British Council, Chinese students contributed £5.4 billion to the UK economy in 2021 through tuition fees and living costs alone. This presents a significant opportunity for Birmingham’s economy and demonstrates the substantial impact of the Chinese community in the UK.
We believe in the value of sharing cross-cultural topics on social media and take responsibility for making Chinese international students feel included in the UK.
