In the world of greetings cards, some ideas are born from focus groups and boardrooms. The Bare Cards story, however, was born from a family kitchen table and a lot of lively, passionate debate.
Husband-and-wife team Derren and Ceri Seal are the minds behind Bare Cards, a company that has successfully patented a self-sealing greetings card format. The journey began 20 years ago when Derren, working in the industry, identified a persistent issue with card and envelope waste.
“Derren became so obsessed with the idea that he drove us all mad talking about it on every car journey we took,” recalls Ceri. “But once the patent was granted—a notoriously difficult milestone to reach—the whole family rallied behind him.”
The business truly became a family project when their daughter, Lauren, then studying Graphics at A-level, helped create initial samples and design the early branding. The team received immediate, positive feedback from both retailers and consumers, with many asking the same question: “Why aren’t all greetings cards made this way?”
Bare Cards saw early digital success when Lauren’s TikTok content went viral, reaching 861,000 views. While social media provides a powerful boost, the family knew the greetings card industry was a saturated, competitive market. Managing a small family budget, Ceri initially balanced running the business with her role in primary schools, helping vulnerable children manage their emotions. In July 2025, the family made the bold decision for Ceri to commit to Bare Cards full- time.
Today, the brand is available in over 80 independent retailers across the South West. A major turning point came in September 2025, when Ceri won Theo Paphitis’ prestigious #SBS (Small Business Sunday) award. “It was an incredibly proud moment to have our dream and our hard work recognised by Theo,” says Ceri.
Looking to the future, the couple’s ambition is to license their patented format to other major publishers, helping the wider industry reduce its environmental footprint one card at a time.
