Forresters gears up for World Intellectual Property Day

Attorneys at Birmingham-based Forresters are offering a complimentary consultation to businesses in the city for World Intellectual Property Day which, this year, looks at the importance of IP rights in the world of sports.

On Friday 26th April, Forresters – a leading firm of patent and trade mark attorneys – will celebrate World Intellectual Property Day and the role that intellectual property (IP) rights play in encouraging innovation and creativity. This year the theme of the day is called Reach for Gold and takes a look inside the world of sports. As part of the celebrations for the day, Forresters will be offering courtesy initial advice to businesses in the area that are interested in protecting their IP rights.

Forresters has a number of clients from the world of sport, and one of these is Fairfax Saddles in Bloxwich, near Walsall, whose product development is headed by former international showjumper Vanessa Fairfax. Developed with Olympic riders including Spencer Wilton, Kitty King and Australian triple Olympic gold medalist Andrew Hoy, its range of patented products include the Performance Girth, which was described by ‘Horse & Hound’ magazine as ‘Team GBR’s secret weapon’ at the London 2012 Olympics.

Vanessa said: “Sadly, whenever there’s a great idea, there’s always someone who will want to copy it and sell the idea as their own. This is why game-changing designs and inventions such as ours are protected by patents. A specialist like Forresters can nail down the process and give your protection a proper structure, making sure there are no loopholes and you’re fully protected in all markets.”

Forresters also support Neston Cricket Club in Parkgate, near Liverpool, and the iconic Brabham motor-racing family.

Matt Shaw, Equity Partner at Forresters, said: “Sports have become a huge global industry, employing millions of people around the world and entertaining many more. Securing IP rights helps to stimulate growth of the industry by enabling sports organisations to finance events and develop sports at grassroots levels.

“Forresters are looking forward to supporting World Intellectual Property Day which, this year, doesn’t just look at sports teams, but also the development of new sports technologies, materials, training, and equipment to help improve athletic performance and engage fans worldwide. From sports personalities to broadcasting rights, everyone in this exciting industry benefits from protecting their intellectual property to ensure they can continue to innovate and inspire us all.

“Anyone from across the world of business that is interested in finding out more about their intellectual property, and how it can boost their company’s performance, can get in touch with us for advice on the next steps to take.”
