Digital agency Atomic Media appoints new Head of People and Culture

A leading Midlands web and app developer has appointed a new head of people and culture to spearhead a recruitment drive as it expands its business.

David Wilson has been appointed to the newly-created role at AtomicMedia, which works with several global brands and has seen a spike in demand for digital products as businesses plan their post-lockdown returns to work.

David, 46, who has a background in recruitment, said the new role was a natural progression, reflecting the company’s commitment to creating the type of culture to attract and retain a talented workforce.

“It’s a really exciting role and links into everything I’m passionate about,” said David. “We want to bring in the right people, have a workplace and culture which they will enjoy and thrive in and be encouraged to see a long-term future here.”

Nottingham-based AtomicMedia has experienced significant growth after securing a number of new contracts since the first lockdown. One major client is construction equipment giant JCB, for whom it recently designed an interactive educational website for children to use during the pandemic.

It has also created online mobile and app systems for Vodafone, Rolls-Royce, Scania and websites for a number of companies, including TruFrame, one of the UK’s largest independent uPVC frame manufacturers.

Many more projects are being worked on and in the pipeline, leading to the need to recruit more staff. In particular, the firm is looking for user experience (UX) and user interface (UI) designers, a full stack developer and a product owner who can manage projects from start to finish.

Duncan Beiley, Atomic Founder and Managing Director, said it was seeing a real need for digital products that can help firms communicate with their staff.

“Companies are coming back to work and they realise that they need to work differently, they need to work smarter and they are looking towards tech to really push them on,” said Duncan.

“Lockdown has really made employers take note of how they communicate with staff when a large majority of them are working from home. People from the same company haven’t physically seen colleagues for over a year.”

He said the role of head of people and culture would help to create the sort of environment that new recruits would want to be part of.

“When you have new people starting, it really is important that you are able to retain them and offer them a clear pathway for their career as they have skills that are in very high demand. We need to understand what our people want to get out of their jobs and we really look after those who want to be here,” Duncan added.

“That’s the culture we are creating and we are delighted that David has come on board to help us recruit the best possible people for the future as our business continues to expand.

“It’s an exciting time for us and we don’t want to lose sight of how important our team is to that success. David will be key to finding the right employees, gaining a good understanding of what they want and how we can ensure that they want to stay with us and build their careers.”

David, who previously worked at IT service management company Node4 Limited, based in Derby, said one of the challenges would be looking after colleagues either working at home or in the office.

“We’re seeing more people return to offices generally but you can’t force anything – people need to feel comfortable with it,” he said.

“We’ve seen massive changes in how people work and now we have to adapt and find a way for everyone to feel included and part of a team. I’m certainly looking forward to more face-to-face interaction.”
