Designs fit for the King created by primary pupil

Artwork by a five-year-old from Derby Grammar School features on a card being sent to His Majesty King Charles III.

William Harrison-Chen created his design in response to a card competition set by Derby North MP Amanda Solloway.

His card featured a portrait of King Charles, with a castle and was completed with a green and yellow background to represent His Majesty’s love of nature.

She asked children across her Derby North constituency to design a card which would be sent to Buckingham Palace for His Majesty’s Coronation.

William’s teacher, Angela Wheat, worked with her class to research the coronation and King before setting the design task.

She said: “This is amazing news! William can lack confidence in his artwork but when he was set this task, he thought so hard about his design and asked a lot of questions when we began researching about King Charles.

“You could tell how thoughtful he was about this project from the way he explained why he chose and used the colours he did. This will be such a huge accomplishment for him and I could not be prouder.”

The standard of entries to the competition was so high that Amanda selected two winners, William and six-year-old Charlie Smith from Mickleover Primary School, in Vicarage Road, for his drawing of a crown, orb and sceptre complete with bunting.

Their artwork now features on a card being sent to His Majesty congratulating him on his Coronation on behalf of everyone in Derby North.

The cards have also been seen by Prime Minister Rishi Sunak as Amanda showed them to him before sending them to the Palace.

She said: “We thoroughly enjoyed going through all the wonderful designs sent into us by creative Derby children – thank you to everyone who took part in the competition.

“Having received hundreds of entries it was incredibly hard to choose just one winner, so in the end I chose two instead.

“Congratulations Charlie and William!”
