Christmas arrives at St Richard’s Hospice

St Richard’s Hospice staff around the Christmas tree

Staff and volunteers have been busy ‘decking the halls’ of a city hospice ready for Christmas.

Festive garlands are up, baubles are shining and five magnificent Christmas trees are standing proud around St Richard’s Hospice in Worcester.

The trees have been donated by the award-winning Webbs Garden Centres and are in place outside the hospice, in reception, on the In-patient Unit and in the Living Well Centre for patients and their loved ones to enjoy.

Ed Webb, Chairman and Owner of Webbs, said: “It is our pleasure to donate Christmas trees for the enjoyment of the patients and their families receiving support from St Richard’s Hospice at this time of year.

“The team at the hospice work tirelessly to improve the lives of people in the communities around us, and we hope this contribution brings a little joy and delight over the festive period.”

Over the past week, patients attending a therapeutic day at the hospice’s Living Well Centre have enjoyed parties – which include festive crafts and a Christmas lunch.

June Patel, Chief Executive of St Richard’s Hospice, said: “Christmas is such an important time for everyone here at the hospice.

“We know it can be an especially difficult and emotional time for many of those who we care for, so we work our hardest to ensure the festive season is as joyful and homely as possible.

“The building looks so festive, thanks to the work of our volunteers and staff. We are so very grateful to Webbs for donating such beautiful trees – they really bring Christmas cheer to the hospice.”

The hospice, based in Wildwood Drive, is also set to host the final event in its Lights of Love campaign – a carols evening on Thursday, December 19. Anyone is welcome to attend this event, which will start at 7pm.

St Richard’s Hospice cares for adults with a serious progressive illness, improving their quality of life from diagnosis, during treatment and to their last days. It also supports their loved ones.

Each year the hospice team supports more than 3,400 patients, family members and bereaved people in Worcestershire.

St Richard’s is an independent charity and relies on donations and gifts in Wills for the majority of its income with 22% funded by the NHS.

The hospice is also raising funds for the Build 2020 Appeal and is part way through developing a bigger hospice, enabling more patients and families to be cared for in Worcestershire. The total cost for expanding and redeveloping the existing building in Wildwood Drive, Worcester, is £5.3m.
