Cathedral Quarter and St Peters Quarter BIDs join forces to celebrate Purple Flag Month

The Cathedral Quarter and St Peters Quarter Business Improvement Districts (BIDs) are celebrating Purple Flag Month this October, in recognition of being awarded the status for the 11th consecutive year.

The Purple Flag accreditation is awarded by the Association of Town and City Management (ATCM) and acknowledges towns and cities for their excellence in the management of the evening and night-time economy.

Derby’s Purple Flag Award recognises Derby as providing a vibrant and diverse mix of dining, entertainment, and culture, whilst promoting the safety and wellbeing of visitors and residents.

This month, the BIDs are working with local businesses to raise awareness of the award via a social media campaign which is currently running to celebrate our evening economy, highlighting those that exhibit the excellence, variety, and dynamism of the night-time economy.

The campaign also highlights the partnerships with the police and voluntary groups such as the Street Pastors and Taxi Marshalls who help to keep revellers safe whilst in the city.

To celebrate, Derby’s Council House has been lit up purple and Derby QUAD will be projecting the Purple Flag logo on its building.

Areas with Purple Flag accreditation is testament to the strength of collaboration among a diverse range of partners. These include local businesses, city authorities, law enforcement agencies, and community organisations such as Derby’s Street Pastors.

Brad Worley, BID Manager for both Cathedral Quarter and St Peters Quarter BIDs, said: “The Purple Flag award represents a celebration of the safety, liveliness, and variety found within the evening and night-time attractions of our city.

“This acknowledgment is the result of collaborative efforts, and throughout Derby, we witness remarkable instances of such partnerships. With each passing year and the introduction of additional venues, restaurants, shops, and events, Derby’s night-time economy continues to expand and flourish.”

Councillor Nadine Peatfield, Derby City Council Cabinet Member for City Centre, Regeneration, Culture and Tourism, said: “We’re very proud that Derby has retained its Purple Flag status for more than a decade. It is testament to the excellent work done by the Council and our partners to ensure our city offers a diverse, exciting and safe experience to our residents and visitors.”
