Birmingham’s premier barbershop opens dedicated wellness studio as male self-care hits cultural tipping point

Shepherds Studio

As British men quietly redefine what it means to look after themselves, Birmingham’s most established men’s salon and barbershop, Shepherds, has launched a new space dedicated to men’s wellness.

With Shepherds Salon already located on New Street, the award-winning team has now launched Shepherds Studio. Located within Burlington Building, the space is designed to complement Shepherds’ existing grooming services, offering a curated selection of personal care treatments including waxing, reflexology, and massage.

The therapies are delivered by specialist Treatment Therapist Ranjeet Kaur, who brings 20 years of industry experience and specialises in Ayurvedic techniques. Having studied in India, where she returns annually to refresh her skills, Ranjeet provides authentic Ayurvedic massage, a practice that is rarely found in the UK which provides lymphatic drainage. These types of massages help to boost immunity, release stress and flush out toxins, providing much needed relief for the mind and body.

To further enhance their specialised wellness studio, the studio has partnered with Dermalogica, the global leader in professional skincare, to provide expert skin treatments and therapies for their customers.

The launch of Shepherds Studio comes at a defining moment for male wellness in the UK. Research shows that male spa-goers have increased by 346% since 2018; a rise that reflects not a passing trend, but a fundamental shift in how men relate to their own health. Half of young British men have had a grooming or beauty treatment in the past year, with 76% reporting that such visits actively support their mental wellbeing. Massages have emerged as the treatment of choice, with 80% of male spa-goers opting for deep-tissue or sports therapies, most often cited for physical recovery, but increasingly for stress management too.

Yet despite this growth, barriers remain. Around 36% of men still associate spas with stigma, and nearly 30% feel existing wellness spaces don’t adequately cater to them. Shepherds Studio has been built with precisely these men in mind: a destination for personal maintenance and performance treatments, keeping the modern man sharp, functional, and ahead.

Co-founded by Master Barber David Sturgeon and Valeria Berrazueta in 2017, Shepherds has spent almost a decade building a reputation as Birmingham’s leading men’s salon and now employs a team of 15. Shepherds Studio marks the next chapter: an evolution from grooming destination to full-service men’s wellness space.

Commenting on the launch and the business’ expansion, David said: “The idea for the studio has been in our sights for years. We’ve always wanted to create a space where we could offer something more to the men of this city. After years of travelling and working in high-pressure environments, I wanted to build a space that elevated self-care for men. I work with a fantastic team and it’s thanks to their hard work that this launch has been possible.”

Ranjeet Kaur, Treatment Therapist, added: “The range of treatments we offer has been specifically designed for the men of Birmingham, and reflects the growing need for health and wellness services to fit within a busy working calendar. We offer a more elevated experience in The Studio; it’s an incredibly welcoming space and I look forward to welcoming many clients over the coming months.”

Shepherds Studio is located within Burlington Court, New Street. Treatments are available to book now at shepherdsgrooming.com.
