I’m so happy to announce that launching GULP’s new *Art Will Eat Itself * series is visual artist Mau Samayoa.
Born in El Salvador and now based in Birmingham’s Jewellery Quarter, Mau’s “work explores the intricate relationship between memory and information, focusing on how personal experiences can be processed and transcribed into visual forms. Using a meticulous, almost surgical approach—employing scalpels and tweezers— [he transforms] specific memories into abstract bitmaps that reflect themes of cultural identity, time, and the repetitive nature of disciplinary actions and physical punishment.”
The resulting surfaces are beautiful yet intense—tiny incisions and folds speak of repetition, endurance, and performance. To my food-obsessed mind, there’s an uncanny parallel with the acts of cooking and eating: the slicing and chopping of ingredients, the repetitive gestures of fine dining prep, the sensory triggers of memory, and the physical act of consumption. For Art Will Eat Itself, we will have drinks and canapés at Mau’s studio, followed by dinner at GULP, where we will share a vegetarian Salvadorian menu, sharing Mau’s gastronomic cultural heritage with you.
This series is part of GULP’s creative programme to explore the relationship between art and food—where the visual, sensory, and edible collide. GULP, Unit 8 Spencer Street 24 September, 7pm.
