Birmingham recruitment group raise over £8,000 for Macmillan

Staff at Birmingham recruitment firm Gleeson have celebrated smashing their £5,000 fundraising target for Macmillan Cancer Support by taking part in the world’s largest coffee morning.

The company has raised a phenomenal £8,000 for the charity over the summer and this week looked to pile on extra pounds in more ways than one by hosting a company bake off as part of Macmillan’s national campaign – with all proceeds going to the charity.

Macmillan has a special place in the hearts of staff at the company after it supported a colleague who sadly died of cancer earlier this year.

In response, the team set up a ‘power an hour’ challenge which tasked their colleagues with raising £28 each – the same amount that it would cost to fund a Macmillan nurse for an hour. So far, the proceeds raised will be enough to fund a nurse for four months’ worth of work in Birmingham.

One of the biggest contributors to the incredible total was a pub quiz night, which brought in £4,000 for the worthy cause.

Other activities included nail painting, hairdressing, karaoke and a gruelling, marathon bike ride.

Jason Blakey, Director at Gleeson, said: “Although we take part in Macmillan’s coffee morning every year, this year has definitely been the best yet.

“The support has been particularly strong today and has been amazing throughout the summer. This is a cause that is especially close to all of our hearts.”

Sara Johnson, Regional Fundraising Manager for Birmingham, Black Country and Staffordshire for Macmillan said: “Gleeson has been a pleasure to work with and the funds they have raised will be vital in allowing us to continue our ongoing work. It’s exciting that this is only the beginning of our partnership!”
