Birmingham father-and-son duo giving away hundreds of books for important cause

A Birmingham father and his six-year-old son are using their own journey to inspire children and families across the city.

Rishi Kaushal, founder of The Speech Heroes, created the children’s communication brand from personal experience following his son Aryan’s speech and language journey.

The purpose-led brand aims to help children feel heard, understood and empowered, while changing the way speech, language and communication challenges are viewed.

Through storytelling, play and community initiatives, The Speech Heroes encourages children to recognise their strengths, build confidence and understand that every child has their own unique journey.

Over the past 12 months, Rishi and Aryan have raised £3,200 through their work, helping to support their mission of raising awareness and creating positive opportunities for children and families.

As part of that mission, The Speech Heroes gifted more than 200 books to children and families across Birmingham on Saturday 1st August.

The campaign began outside the Library of Birmingham before Rishi, Aryan and a team of volunteers made their way through the city centre towards the Bullring, sharing books and spreading the message behind the brand.

The campaign has been supported by a grant from Drop Dead Generous, alongside the generosity of friends, family and the wider community who helped increase the number of books available.

The book being gifted, The Speech Heroes Vs. The Word Stoppers, is a superhero adventure inspired by Aryan’s journey.

The story follows a young child who faces challenges with communication and discovers that the things that make him different can also become his greatest strengths.

When faced with the Word Stoppers, Aryan learns that being a hero is not about being perfect — it is about courage, resilience and finding his own way to be heard.

Rishi hopes children will connect with the empowering message behind the story and see a part of themselves within the characters.

He said: “I want children to really connect with the story and understand that every child has strengths, every child has their own journey and every child has the potential to be their own hero.

“Whether a child faces challenges with communication or not, the message is the same — believe in yourself, celebrate who you are and never let challenges define you.”

Through an imaginative superhero world, The Speech Heroes Vs. The Word Stoppers encourages children to believe in themselves, celebrate their individuality and recognise that everyone has their own strengths and abilities.

The campaign is one part of the wider vision behind The Speech Heroes, which aims to support children and families through storytelling, play and community experiences while raising awareness of speech, language and communication challenges.

For Rishi and Aryan, the purpose is simple — to create positive experiences that help children feel valued, included and inspired.
