Balfour Beatty Living Places donates bras for breast cancer

Balfour Beatty Living Places, who look after roads and public spaces for Herefordshire Council, is getting into the Christmas spirit by supporting Breast Cancer Haven, Hereford’s bra bank campaign.

Breast Cancer Haven is a national charity that supports women throughout or after their breast cancer treatment.

Breast Cancer Haven, Hereford started collecting second hand bras this summer and has since raised £400.00 from items people would ordinarily throw away. The second hand bras are recycled, or nearly new bras are donated to Eastern Europe, central Africa, and South Asia for reuse, so nothing goes to landfill.

Andy Williams, Director of Balfour Beatty Living Places in Herefordshire said: “We are more used to emptying bins than filling them but staff rallied round to support Breast Cancer Haven. They filled a bra bank in a matter of weeks. We regularly support charities and good causes in the county, with each member of staff having two paid volunteer days to support causes close to them. Both male and female employees contributed by encouraging friends and relatives to donate unwanted items.”

Julie Nicholas, Corporate and Community Fundraiser for Breast Cancer Haven in Hereford said: “Local businesses have really got on board with this campaign and almost overnight all 55 of our Bra Banks were allocated. We are now on the look out for new support to sponsor our next batch of Bra Banks.”

“Our Bra Bank project is looking for a local sponsor with a similar synergy to the campaign, a company that supports environmental issues, believes in people and the understanding of how crucial our free service is.

“This sponsorship will allow Breast Cancer Haven to be sustainable, it offers a future of long-term fundraising, brings the community together, supports locally, nationally and internationally, spreads our message further afield and helps protect our Earth.”
