A commercial manager will run the length of nearly two marathons this month in aid of a charity which tackles the asbestos-related cancer, mesothelioma.
Sian Stone has been inspired to take part in the fundraiser for Mesothelioma UK by her work for Acorn Analytical Services which offers professional asbestos consultancy services and raises awareness about the dangers of asbestos.
She has pledged to run at least 50 miles throughout February in exchange for donations to the charity which provides specialist mesothelioma information, support and education and fights to improve care and treatment for all UK mesothelioma patients and their carers.
Sian, who has worked for Acorn for nearly seven years, said: “Mesothelioma is a devastating form of cancer which is almost always caused by exposure to asbestos. Sadly, almost 2,500 people die from the illness in the UK every year – although it is thought this figure may actually be higher as not all cases are diagnosed.
“Our team at Acorn works tirelessly every day to help people and businesses protect themselves from being exposed to asbestos and we work with various cancer charities to raise awareness about this hazardous substance.
“This is what has inspired me to put on my running shoes for Mesothelioma UK. I’m not the biggest fan of running so this will be a challenge for me but I’m determined to do it to raise money for this cause which is very close to our hearts at Acorn.”
Sian, and other members of the Acorn team, have previously raised money for other charities, such as Cynthia Spencer Hospice by taking on challenges such as the mud run and obstacle course, Tough Mudder.
With this latest fundraiser, Sian hopes to raise at least £200 for Mesothelioma UK and is accepting donations online at www.justgiving.com/fundraising/sian-stone1.
Acorn, which has bases in Northamptonshire, Birmingham and Cleckheaton, is currently in talks with Mesothelioma UK about working with it on a number of projects this year. It also produces regular informative podcasts and blogs and has created a step-by-step guide to help organisations become fully compliant with the law called the Acorn Asbestos Antidote.
