The Wellingborough & North Northamptonshire Chamber of Commerce has become an incorporated organisation for the first time, marking its biggest governance change since being founded in 1932.
For more than nine decades, the Chamber has supported generations of businesses across Wellingborough and, more recently, the wider North Northamptonshire area. Until now, like many long-established volunteer organisations, it had operated as an unincorporated association.
Following unanimous support from its committee, the Chamber has now been incorporated as WNNCC Ltd, a Company Limited by Guarantee, providing a modern legal structure designed to strengthen governance, improve accountability and protect the organisation for future generations.
The move forms part of a wider programme of modernisation that has seen the Chamber expand its geographical reach across North Northamptonshire, invest in new digital systems and strengthen the foundations needed to support local businesses long into the future.
Adam Fox, President of the Wellingborough & North Northamptonshire Chamber of Commerce, said: “Nobody joins a chamber because it’s incorporated with Companies House. This isn’t the exciting part of what we do, but it is one of the most important.
“If we’re asking businesses to invest their time, trust and membership fees in us, then we have a responsibility to make sure the organisation itself is built on solid foundations. Incorporation gives us stronger governance, greater transparency and better protection for the volunteers who give up their time to run the Chamber.”
The Chamber has evolved through changing economic conditions, technological advances and generations of local business leadership. While its structure has changed, its purpose remains exactly the same: supporting businesses across North Northamptonshire.
Adam added: “We’re incredibly proud of the people who have kept this Chamber going for more than nine decades. Every committee has inherited something valuable and passed it on. Our responsibility is to do exactly the same.
“This isn’t about changing who we are, it’s about making sure the Chamber is fit for the future so that businesses across North Northamptonshire continue to have a strong, independent voice for many years to come.”
The incorporation marks another milestone in the Chamber’s ongoing transformation as it continues to modernise its operations while remaining one of the UK’s few truly independent Chambers of Commerce.
