Patients and visitors are sitting pretty thanks to the donation and installation of a new bench at a Telford medical centre.
Wellington Rotary was approached by the Shawbirch and Surrounding Area Wellbeing Hub (SASA) for help in providing the bench at Shawbirch Medical Centre and the resulting collaboration between the two organisations has now resulted in the bench being ‘officially opened’.
The ceremony was carried out by Dr Clare McDermott, assisted by Dr Tressie Chapman – partners at the medical centre. Dr McDermott thanked Wellington Rotary for the funding they had provided to SASA, and Ian Carvell and Dr Caroline Freeman of SASA for organising the installation.
Dr Chapman said: “The bench is well used by patients waiting for transport home after attending the centre.” Dr Freeman added: “It is so wonderful that there is a developing bond between Wellington Rotary and SASA to maximise our support to the community.”
Peter Seaward, of Wellington Rotary, said: “We were only too pleased to respond to a request from SASA to install a bench outside the centre. The bench had already been much-used prior to the ‘official opening’ and will clearly be of benefit to those patients and visitors using the centre.
“Wellington Rotary is very impressed by the work of the SASA trustees and volunteers in the community – they would make very good Rotary members! We are pleased to support them with publicity material like a gazebo, banners and so on, and are absolutely delighted to join forces with them to give comfort to those waiting for transport after a visit to the doctors.”
Wellington Rotary meets each Friday lunchtime at the Pheasant, Admaston, and new members are always welcome to attend. Rotary is one of the largest charity organisations worldwide and has several more clubs operating within Telford that host evening meetings.
SASA holds regular presentations on health issues at the Shawbirch Medical Centre, as well as events such as information fairs and community teas. The group also runs The Chattery, a chat café on most Wednesdays at Admaston House from 10am to 1pm. Telford & Wrekin Wellbeing Walks also leave Admaston House at 10am and return around 11am for refreshments and activities.
