An optometrist from Aberdeen is preparing to swap the consulting room for the rugby field after being selected to represent Scotland at an international tournament in France.
Craig McCoy, from McPherson Optometry, has earned a place in the Scotland Over-30s Touch Rugby squad, and will compete against some of Europe’s best players in Vichy despite only taking up the sport three years ago.
Craig, who previously played rugby union, discovered touch rugby shortly after the birth of his daughter, looking for a sport that offered a competitive outlet while fitting around family life.
He is now preparing to pull on the Scotland jersey on the international stage.
Craig said: “I’d played rugby union for years, but after my daughter arrived I was looking for something that would keep me active. I saw some guys playing in my local park and decided to give it a go. I was hooked almost immediately.
“I honestly had no idea there were opportunities like this when I first started playing. Representing Scotland is something I never imagined would happen, so to be selected for the Over-30s squad is an incredible honour.”
Unlike traditional rugby union, Touch Rugby is a fast-paced, non-contact version of the game played six-a-side on a half-sized pitch. Rather than tackling, defenders stop attacking players with a simple touch, creating a sport that places far greater emphasis on speed, agility, endurance and teamwork. With fewer players and a smaller playing area, competitors are constantly involved in the action, resulting in significantly more ball carries and requiring exceptional levels of fitness.
The international tournament in Vichy will bring together leading touch rugby players from across Europe, providing Craig with the opportunity to test himself against some of the sport’s strongest international talent while representing his country.
Craig added: “Touch rugby is one of the most physically demanding sports I’ve ever played. Because it’s six-a-side on a smaller pitch you’re constantly moving and constantly involved. I’ve never played a sport that demands so much fitness.
“Everyone at McPherson Optometry has been incredibly supportive, and it’s been lovely to have so many patients wishing me good luck before I head to France. Their encouragement means a great deal.”
The team at McPherson Optometry will be cheering him on throughout the competition.
