The family of a two-year-old girl who died from undiagnosed type 1 diabetes last year is organising a fun-filled afternoon of entertainment to raise money to support other children affected by the condition.
Games, music and stalls are just some of the activities that will provide entertainment for visitors to The Goodfellowship pub in Cottingham Road, Hull at the upcoming Family Fun Day organised by John Story, in memory of his daughter Lyla who died from diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) – a life-threatening complication of type 1 diabetes.
Other activities include a bouncy castle, face painting, a raffle and an evening auction. Families across Hull and the rest of the UK are invited to help raise vital funds and increase awareness in her memory by attending the event from 12pm on Saturday, August 1. All proceeds will go to the HEY Kids Type 1 Diabetes Children & Family Support Group.
John said: “We’re hoping everyone will turn out to attend this family event and help us to make a valuable contribution to an important cause.
He added: “Every contribution is a step towards change that keeps her memory alive in the most meaningful way.”
Lyla Story died in her sleep in May 2025, hours after receiving a diagnosis of acute tonsillitis, even though she presented with symptoms linked to type 1 diabetes, such as extreme tiredness, increased thirst and more wet nappies.
John has since campaigned tirelessly across all levels of the health system and even secured a House of Commons debate in March 2026, calling for a ‘test, don’t guess’ approach, which has resonated strongly across the type 1 community, where delayed diagnosis has been a long-standing concern.
To honour their daughter’s memory and to safeguard other children going forward, her family launched a petition advocating for Lyla’s Law, which would legislate NICE Guideline NG18, to make routine diabetes testing mandatory for babies, toddlers, children and adolescents whenever any of the ‘4 T’s’ appear: Toileting, Thirst, Tiredness and Thinning.
