A security team that has prevented numerous suicide attempts, dealt with two firearms offences and helped the police apprehend a suspect has been named as the ‘best of the best’ when it comes to security in London.
MAN Commercial Protection was announced as the capital’s winner for Customer Service Excellence at the prestigious British Security Industry Awards, beating off competition from tens of outstanding firms.
The 13-strong team was recognised for its work in keeping people safe at The Brewery Shopping Centre in Romford, a busy mixed-use destination that attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors every year.
Judges praised officers for the way they communicate effectively, back one another without hesitation and understand their individual roles within wider incident management.
Their ability to transition between crime prevention, emergency response, public reassurance and partnership was also highlighted.
“Our officers go out of their way to keep The Brewery safe, which is noted in every monthly mystery shopper report – meaning the community enjoys visiting the centre,” explained MAN Commercial Protection’s CEO Iain McCallister, who visited the team to present their awards from the British Security Industry Association.
One of the highlights last year was the way the MAN Commercial Protection team responded to a major police pursuit in June.
Security officers identified an active police car chase entering the vicinity of the centre, involving multiple vehicles pursuing a suspect.
As they abandoned the vehicle and attempted to escape on foot, the team maintained vigilance and situational awareness across the site. One officer successfully intercepted and detained the fleeing suspect, working seamlessly with colleagues to ensure the area was secured and the individual safely handed over to police.
The suspect was later identified as a known drugs offender, who required urgent medical attention, demonstrating the ability to balance enforcement with safeguarding and welfare considerations.
Stuart Wilson, Centre Manager at The Brewery, added his support: “Our MAN Commercial security team, supported by our excellent in-house managers, are the face of the centre, the lifeblood of its operation and we wouldn’t be able to operate effectively with anyone else. We cannot speak highly enough of them, and they richly deserve their award.”
MAN Commercial Protection will now go forward and compete for the national Customer Service title at the British Security Industry Awards, which will be held at the Royal Lancaster Hotel in London in June.
