Showing up for the North West green community

Karen Daniels

Preston business owner, Karen Daniels, has been elected to the North West Centre Council of the Chartered Institution of Wastes Management (CIWM) as a volunteer council member. It’s a local, practical role helping to organise CPD events, supporting the regional members, and playing a small part in keeping the North West green sector connected.

CIWM promotes professional standards and best practice in waste and resource management, and its network of regional centres plays an important part in keeping members connected and informed at a local level.

For Karen, a Chartered Waste Manager and Sustainability Practitioner, the role is a natural fit. Having worked across environmental consultancy, sustainable healthcare and operations in the green sector, she brings a practical understanding of what good operational practice looks like in sustainability-led settings. She also recognises the gaps that can make it harder for people to enter or progress in these fields. The council provides a useful local forum for starting those kinds of conversations and making career-changing connections.

Through Sustly Business Solutions, Karen delivers her Green OBM service, this is a unique business management service for ethical and sustainability-led businesses, providing hands-on operational support that helps business owners grow without getting bogged down in delivery.

“Having worked in and alongside the waste industry for over a decade, I’m excited to be able to give something back to the industry as it faces some tough challenges with legislative change, Net Zero and the green skills gap. I hope I can provide valuable insight and support to members, particularly on how smaller businesses can tackle some of the barriers to entry. Showing up locally, being useful, and contributing where it matters feels like the right place to start”  – Karen Daniels, Director at Sustly Business Solutions Limited.

Karen is already looking forward to getting stuck in, whether that’s helping organise the next CPD event or just being a helpful, friendly and familiar face for members across the region.
