Classic Clough quotes at nostalgia event

Author Marcus Alton hosting the Brian Clough nostalgia event in Mansfield

The classic quotes of football legend Brian Clough were remembered at a special multi-media event in Nottinghamshire.

Around 50 people attended the afternoon of Clough nostalgia hosted by best-selling author and award-winning podcaster Marcus Alton at Mansfield Library.

Marcus has written five books about former Nottingham Forest and Derby County boss Clough. He also hosts the Green Jumper podcast, which features stories and memories of the charismatic Clough, who died in 2004. The pod has listeners in over 90 countries.

“It was a great celebration of Cloughie memories, while helping to raise money for good causes with my books and Green Jumper souvenirs,” said Marcus.

“In the audience Q&A at the end, I was asked to give my favourite Cloughie quote. There were so many brilliant Clough comments over the years, but I chose the one I discovered from a rare regional TV interview. It’s become the most popular of his classic quotes.”

During an interview looking back at his career, Clough said: “I wasn’t the best manager in the business, but I was in the top one.”

Marcus added: “Another favourite quote followed a rare defeat, when Clough reflected on his team selection. He said, ‘We had a good team on paper. Unfortunately the game was played on grass.’”

The nostalgia event featured stories from Marcus’ latest book, Brian Clough The Lost Tapes, which is supporting Nottinghamshire Hospice and the NSPCC. More events are planned with local groups from the University of the Third Age.
