What does a typical day look like for you, and how do you structure your time?

It usually starts early with a 40-minute commute, giving me time to get focused for the day ahead. Once I’m in, I begin by reviewing emails and messages before joining a short production meeting to assess the day’s workload and priorities.

From there, I move into the operational side, submitting invoices, managing banking, and ensuring everything behind the scenes is running smoothly. While we’ve streamlined logistics by having most customers handle their own collections and drop-offs, I still take a hands-on role when needed, including deliveries.

A large part of my day is spent speaking directly with customers including handling enquiries, preparing quotes, and ensuring we’re delivering the right solutions. Staying close to both the operational and customer-facing sides of the business is key in this industry.

What’s one myth about your industry or role that you’d like to bust?

A common misconception is that business owners are “loaded.” The reality is very different—once wages are paid, there are taxes, overheads, and constant financial pressures to manage. Running a business requires careful balancing and long-term thinking.

What does success look like to you – and has that changed over time?

Early on, I thought success was purely financial. Over time, my perspective has shifted. Now, it’s about achieving a healthy work-life balance and having the opportunity to spend quality time with my family, especially my granddaughter.

Professionally, success comes from delivering high-quality work for our customers. Even when things don’t go to plan, taking responsibility, putting it right, and maintaining trust is what really matters.

What’s one initiative or achievement you’re particularly proud of — and why?

I’m proud of building a team where people feel valued. We focus on paying fair wages and creating an environment where employees want to stay, grow, and build their future alongside the company. That stability is essential for maintaining quality and consistency in our work.

What legacy or impact do you hope to leave through your work?

For me, it’s simple, I’d like people to say, “I like going to work.”
I’ve experienced jobs I didn’t enjoy, and I never want that to be the case here. Creating a positive, supportive workplace culture is just as important as delivering great results.

What’s the most surprising lesson you’ve learned in your leadership journey?

How challenging it really is. Leadership involves constant balancing—people, finances, operations—and it can weigh on you more than you expect. It’s rewarding, but it’s not easy.

How do you stay motivated when things get tough?

Support networks are vital. Talking to family, friends, and other business owners who’ve faced similar challenges helps put things into perspective. It reminds you that tough periods are part of the journey, and that you’re not alone.

What are you currently doing to grow as a business leader?

I make a conscious effort to switch off outside of work, but I learn a lot through conversations with other business owners. Sharing experiences and insights can be incredibly valuable. You’d be surprised how much you can take away from a simple conversation.

Which leader or entrepreneur has influenced you the most — and why?

Richard Branson has always stood out to me. He’s built an incredible global brand, yet maintains a positive, approachable outlook. I know people who’ve worked within the Virgin brand, and they speak highly of both the culture and his leadership style, that says a lot.

What’s one piece of advice you wish you’d been given at the start of your career?

Start investing early, even small amounts. It’s not always easy when you’re starting out, but building that habit early can make a big difference over time.
