Join University Hospitals Birmingham Charity for a full week dedicated to celebrating the Charity’s Homes from Home campaign and bringing to life the stories of the guests who have benefitted from staying in these.
University Hospitals Birmingham Charity’s Home away from Home appeal helps to provide patients and families with free accommodation near to our hospitals, helping to keep families together during difficult times in their lives. Visiting the hospitals can be a stressful experience without the added pressure of trying to find somewhere to stay to be near a loved one. The Charity provides these Homes away from Homes to alleviate that stress, and make visiting the hospital, under what can be very difficult circumstances, as easy as possible.
The week of the 23rd August will see various stories being told from those who have stayed at the Charity’s Homes from Home. Some of the most recent guests have included John and his wife Pamela, who stayed at one of the homes in the days preceding John going into hospital for vital treatment. John was diagnosed with cancer in May 2020, and is currently being treated at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham. The couple have been married for 43 years and throughout their marriage have never been apart from each other for more than a week, so by staying close to the hospital, it allowed the couple to remain together for as long as possible until John went into hospital for treatment. The couple were incredibly grateful for the stay in one of the Charity’s homes, with John remarking, “These cottages are so important to people like myself and my wife; they have ensured I could get my treatment and allowed an extra few days with family – that’s priceless, as some people don’t get those extra few days.”
Throughout this week UHB Charity will be sharing interviews with those who have stayed in the homes across their social media platforms, to raise awareness of the great benefit this accommodation has to patients and their families, all whilst encouraging people to support the Homes from Home appeal.
