First black female Muslim owned business launched pop up store in Birmingham Bullring against all odds of the pandemic

‘Many had said that it is impossible to launch in the height of a pandemic and with uncertain footfall that it cannot be done. As I am all about empowering others by leading by example, I chose to be the change that I want to see in the world. Someone has to be the first at some point and why not let that be me.’

On the 28th of April 2021, Natalie Sakinah launched an empowerment popup store for her brand ‘Murr De Murr’. Murr De Murr is a modest, luxury, kaftan & Abaya wear store that will be in the heart of Birmingham Bullring City Centre.

The boutique will embody Natalies unique, glamorous, timeless aesthetic. With signature Dubai style gowns & handmade kaftans for both Muslim & none muslim women to indulge in.

Natalie: People ask why now during the pandemic, But my question is why not now? I’m blessed to be standing next to a lot of amazing women who not only support but uplift each other. That support network, my amazing family who work in the business, they make all this possible to launch anything during the pandemic .

Business women like Amina Hussain, CEO of SME Outsourcing and business woman of the year winner. Zoe Bennett, Founder of the MBCC awards, an award winning author, mentor & trainer to name a few. Zoe has now launched a jewellery brand which I am so honoured to have featured in the store ( motivational wear jewellery). Both zoe and Amina will be cutting the ribbon at the launch ceremony . These woman are a small number of the powerful, strong women that are unstoppable forces. I am honoured to have these queens standing next to me at the up coming launch.

Natalie: Growing up in Newtown Birmingham, I have always been deeply passionate about fashion. My own personal style has always caused a lot of conversation due to my style being so different. I believe it is important for people’s true self to shine with confidence, & its not always about following the crowd. For me, style is subjective & everyone has a unique vibe to them. I cover they way I do because I am a proud muslima who prays, the day to day attire I wear is islamic clothing which is also prayer clothing, but on special occasions I love to dress up whilst still remaining modest, which is why I love Abayas .

Abayas are long wide gowns , can be resembled to a dressing robe & long flowing cardigan, except Abayas are usually made with luxurious chiffons & are heavily embellished with jewels & stones.

Natalie, who turned down 3 model agency contract offers to live her life as a Muslim at the age of 17, started the brand in January 2019 . she has since partnered with small boutiques across the midlands & hosted popups in their stores, as well as rented stalls at local events. Natalie feels that launching the store during this pandemic time isn’t a risky move, rather she sees it as perfect timing at the end of lockdown period. People want to celebrate, go out & finally have an occasion to dress up to, that’s were I come in – making women feel fabulous about themselves through fashion.
