Uniting to fight homelessness – families challenged to sleep out at home this Easter

CEO Sleepout UK is challenging compassionate individuals from all walks of life to take part in the Big Easter Sleepout At Home in a bid to boost funding for charities on the front line of homelessness and poverty. Last year, CEO Sleepout raised £60,000 from two virtual events and hopes to raise over £100,000 from virtual events in 2021.

On 1 April, families across the country will give up their warm beds to literally ‘sleep out’ somewhere safe inside or outside their home. They’ll join their fellow participants virtually via video link on the night, with fun activities to keep them motivated and warm.

CEO Sleepout is working with charities fighting homelessness in cities across the UK to bring people from the local community together virtually, to spend the night under the stars and experience a little of what those without homes go through every single night. They’ll also learn about the challenges faced by charities during lockdown, continuing to provide accommodation, food and support to help those who have been pulled into destitution and homelessness to get back on their feet.

“Although it’s only for one night, and doesn’t come close to what homeless people experience night after night, The Big Easter Sleepout At Home is intended to raise awareness and lots of money to tackle the rising tide of homelessness we’re seeing as a result of the pandemic and lockdown measures.

“We’re inviting Mums, Dads and families, students, office teams and compassionate people from across the UK  to take part in what is sure to be a memorable and rewarding night.” CEO Sleepout’s Chief Executive, Bianca Robinson, comments.

Since the charity was founded in 2013, CEO Sleepout events have been held at venues across the country, including at Wembley Stadium, St James’ Park Newcastle, Old Trafford cricket ground, The Alnwick Garden and Lord’s Cricket Ground. Its events have raised more than £2.8 million to date.

Strict lockdown measures meant that those outdoor events couldn’t go ahead as planned in 2020, and hundreds of thousands of pounds in fundraising was potentially lost. The charity refused to give up on those in need. Determined to maintain its support for groups like foodbank charity Trussell Trust, CEO Sleepout innovated a new way of doing things. Instead of large scale group sleepouts in iconic locations, over 400 people stayed at home to raise funds to support their brothers and sisters in need.

The big-hearted volunteers gave up their beds and slept on their living room floor or in their gardens – raising a combined total of over £60,000.
