Dispensing Optician of the Year – Richard Spencer, David Burghardt Vision Care

A Lincolnshire-based optician has been named the best in the country in recognition of his dedication to introducing a dispensing clinic for adults and children with Down’s Syndrome.

Richard Spencer, practice manager at David Burghardt Vision Care, based in Church Street, Nettleham, was crowned Dispensing Optician of the Year in the annual Optician Awards.

The glittering ceremony was staged at The Hilton Hotel in Park Lane, London and hosted by TV’s Vernon Kay, with Richard walking away with the coveted accolade.

He said: “I realised I could offer a service that other local practices can’t provide. Due to the nature of our practice we have time, space and a calm atmosphere in which to provide one-to-one care. It’s been an amazing journey, seeing the children grow from being shy and nervous, to running in with a smile.”

Richard has brought in ranges of specific frames, updated the company’s website and is currently developing resources for patients with additional needs.

The forward-thinking practice has been providing eyecare to the community for more than 30 years, offering comprehensive eye examinations alongside innovative ideas and a progressive approach to services and treatment for its patients.

David Burghardt Vision Care was also shortlisted for the Build Back Better category at the Optician Awards while ground-breaking myopia management technology pioneered by the ptractice to offer a potentially lifechanging service to patients has also seen it named a finalist in the Best Use of Technology category at the Investors in People Awards.

Richard added: “It’s always nice to have the hard work of the team recognised, particularly outside of optics. The practice is equipped with the latest diagnostic technology available, enabling our optometrists to detect and diagnose a wide range of eye conditions.

“We use highly specialist equipment to measure and monitor the effectiveness of the myopia treatment and software to enable patients to interact with the practice throughout their myopia management programme.”

Meanwhile, the practice has also been shortlisted for Independent Practice of the Year at the SightCare Awards.
