Every year, around 11,500 women and 85 men die from breast cancer in the UK – that’s nearly 1,000 deaths each month, 31 each day or one every 45 minutes. With that in mind, Cate Bartram, Founder of the Boobee Collective, had the idea to use art to bring a really visible element to October’s Breast Cancer Awareness month.
The collective is aiming to create a large collective piece of art that shows the diversity of breast and breast health.
The artpiece “Splat your Bap” showcases multiple breast prints supplied by people from all over the UK. Each one will be different and supremely beautiful in their own way. Once people take part in the initiative, Cate sends a colourful kit with instructions on how to create your art piece and send it back to her. “Splat your Bap is a creative way I found to send out a message about Breast Cancer, whilst also sharing the story of many incredible people that are part of the movement. I wanted it to be a very colourful representation of how unique our bodies are”, says Cate.
So far, over 70 people joined the movement, and Bartram hopes more and more people will splat their baps. “Everyone has a story to tell, whether they be a proud breastfeeding mum, strong breast cancer fighter, LGBTQ+ warrior or someone battling body issues. Each story is so important. So inspiring and there in visual form”, says.
Cate has started a GoFundMe page where people can help cover posting costs, and all funds raised that are not used for the initiative will be donated to a prominent breast cancer charity.
The goal? To take it to art galleries to spark much needed conversations about breast health. If you want to Splat your Bap, click here.
