After we had found out about Jodie’s incredible baby news, we were filled with questions. Why did she keep it a secret? How did she keep it a secret? How is the baby? What will happen with her work now?
We have the exclusive answers for you.
First up, a name reveal. Jodie’s son’s name is Koa, which means warrior and brave.
Why Jodie kept her pregnancy on the down low
Expecting mums know the pressure modern society puts on women regarding being a working mum. We often hear, “you can’t do both”, “mums aren’t focused”, and “she won’t be as good as she was after the baby is born”.
Many mums have faced prejudice in the workplace, and in the music and tv industry, it’s no different. Jodie didn’t want to be outcast because of her choice to grow her family, she didn’t want to lose opportunities, and she didn’t want people to think she couldn’t handle a baby and a boss career.
Only 32% of DJs are women, and 18% get selected for events and festivals. Jodie believed being an expecting mum would’ve hindered her already slight chances. So, she kept going, featuring in regular DJ sets, releasing music, and staying on top of her game (power move).
Is Jodie happy with her decision to keep the pregnancy a secret?
Absolutely. She believed she did what she needed to do to protect her future, work wise and the health of her baby boy. Expecting mums don’t need the added pressure. She only told 5 of her friends, her mum and of course her son’s father. Not having opinions and negative press certainly helped Jodie power through.
How did Jodie keep it a secret?
Long story short, a whole new wardrobe. Jodie changed up her style, going big and bold. She invested a lot of money into new clothes and accessories that would strategically cover her bump, without losing any glam.
You can see her gorgeous style on her Instagram (170K followers). Jodie is very excited to share her tips and secrets for covering a growing baby bump without losing your flare and style.
How is the baby?
Jodie’s son, Koa is doing well. A healthy and happy little boy.
Jodie stated, “My son is the best thing that’s ever happened to me, just seeing him and knowing that I helped create him is an amazing feeling. He is the love of my life and I’m proud to be a mum. I didn’t keep it a secret because I was ashamed, I did it to ensure I would still have a future and be the best mum I could be to him”.
What will happen with Jodie’s work now?
Full steam ahead! Jodie doesn’t plan to slow down. She’s embracing the full mompreneur life and plans to fit her DJ sets and events around the baby. With a very supportive family and a hunger for success, Jodie is already back in action.
Jodie did a DJ set 9 days post partum which is very hardcore, and she’s now on a few weeks rest to settle into a routine. She has plans to announce some events in a few weeks.
To all working mums
Jodie urges that it’s a mum’s choice to carry on, and it doesn’t affect her work. It’s an outdated belief that mums can’t carry on and won’t continue to be successful. She’s embracing motherhood as the next step in her life and hopes to inspire expecting mums who feel trapped and worried about what will come next.
Jodie says, “do what’s best for your mental health. I didn’t want to lose everything I worked so hard for the past 5 years, and neither do you. Do what makes you happy.
Even Beyonce made 5 music videos in the early stages of her first pregnancy. So, you can do what you set your mind to, it’s your choice”.
