Howbridge C of E Junior School in Witham has recently been crowned the winner of the North Essex Tag Rugby Tournament, a major competition that welcomes schools from across Colchester, Tendring and Braintree. Winning six of its seven games, the Howbridge team was named the overall champion.
A team of boys and girls at Howbridge Church of England Junior School have been named North Essex Tag Rugby Champions this week. Held at Witham Rugby Club, the annual tournament attracts teams from all over North Essex and sees them compete in several matches throughout the day. The Howbridge A team faced tough opposition from schools across the Colchester, Tendring and Braintree district, winning six of their seven games.
The school took three teams to the tournament, two of which finished third and fourth in their respective groups. Having recently been named runners up at the NW Essex Indoor Athletics Championships, the children at Howbridge have been making their mark on sports tournaments throughout Essex.
Team captain, Becket Crossman, commented; “It was a great day. I’d been looking forward to it for ages and getting the opportunity to play alongside my school mates was brilliant. We worked really well together as a team, especially with the help of our brilliant coach, Mr Howlett.”
Damon Howlett, PE Leader at Howbridge C of E Junior School, said; “We value sport highly at Howbridge. It’s great to get the pupils playing competitively and trying out new activities. Some children here have not played rugby competitively before, and now they want to join the local Witham Rugby Club. That’s what it’s all about.”
