A Derby company which designs and manufactures security devices designed to stop vehicles in their tracks has installed two of its latest products at one of Birmingham’s most iconic landmarks.
Securiscape has fitted three of its ingenious hostile vehicle mitigation (HVM) SecuriPod IWA14 temporary barriers and six metres of its IWA14 rated HVM pedestrian guardrails across a boulevard leading through a green space at the Millennium Point meeting and conference venue.
The operators of the venue turned to Securiscape because it wanted to prevent vehicles driving along the boulevard from a car park without restricting pedestrians or ruining the look of its award-winning landscaping.
It is the first time that Securiscape has installed the metal HVM guardrails after launching them last year as a method of preventing vehicles from mounting pavements and causing harm and fatalities.
They are capable of stopping a 2.5 tonne vehicle travelling at 30mph but still look identical to normal pedestrian guardrails which, since they are designed only to prevent pedestrians from accessing the road, do not have the same robust capability.
Securiscape’s SecuriPods, meanwhile, have been used at a host of outdoor public events this year, where they have been used to temporarily close off roads without impeding the progress of pedestrians.
Consisting of a series of boxes linked together by chains, they are able to bring a 7.5 tonne truck travelling at 30mph to a halt without needing to be embedded into the surface of the road.
In another first for the company, the SecuriPods are being used as permanent installations in Birmingham, complete with a stainless steel shroud, branding and floral displays to provide a decorative finish.
Mark Stone, managing director of Securiscape, said: “We’re extremely proud of this latest installation because of the prestigious location and because it’s an example of ‘secret security’ that can deny vehicles access without looking ugly or drawing attention to itself.
“Our SecuriPods and HVM pedestrian guardrails are both the result of years’ worth of in-house R&D and it’s wonderful to see them both in position.”
Linda Degg, Facilities Director at Millennium Point said: “As a landmark building in the heart of Birmingham, we have a large pedestrian boulevard and an award-winning park on our doorstep.
“We wanted to make sure that we had a way of preventing vehicles from accessing our building and wanted a solution that was both effective and aesthetically in keeping with our green space.
“Securiscape have delivered the perfect, sensitive solution and we couldn’t be more pleased with their service. The team have been friendly and accommodating, creative in their approach to our issues and our site with a real determination to delight us with their service.”
Securiscape was set up 13 years ago and it also manufactures and supplies a range of security street furniture, including ballistic litter bins and PAS 68 permanent street planters capable of stopping a 7.5 tonne truck travelling at 40kph.
Its planters have been installed outside a host of buildings across the UK, including Birmingham’s New Street station and the Royal Courts of Justice in London.
