A free event to celebrate Great Big Green Week takes place in Derby in June – thanks to the St Peters Quarter Business Improvement District (BID).
Activities will run all week with a public event on Saturday, June 14, which will include bespoke craft sessions using recycled materials.
Creative artist, Scraggy Moo, will run art and craft workshops for children and their families at St Peter’s Church in Derby, from 11 am to 4 pm. She will encourage youngsters to make eco-friendly art using recycled products which have been donated by businesses in the St Peters Quarter. Celebrating sustainability and talking about how to make a positive impact on our community, Scraggy Moo will help crafters create items including insect houses from clean, recycled cans.
Colourful stilt walkers, decorated head to toe with flowers and butterfly characters on foot, will parade around St Peters Quarter and families will be invited to take selfies.
The Great Big Green Week, which runs from June 8-16, is the UK’s biggest-ever celebration of community action to tackle climate change and protect nature.
Every year, people come together to unleash a wave of support for action to protect the planet. Tens of thousands of people across the UK celebrate the heartfelt, and everyday actions that are being taken to stand up for nature and fight climate change.
The first Great Big Green Week took place in September 2021 and was the largest event to celebrate action on climate change and nature ever seen in the UK. At the following year’s event, more than a quarter of a million people got involved.
Gemma Pindard, Deputy BID Manager for the St Peters Quarter Business Improvement District, said: “You don’t have to book a place on this free event. Just turn up and join us for a day of eco fun as part of Great Big Green Week. It would be great to see everyone.
“We have a fantastic lineup of activities and families will be able to get creative and learn about the environment. Scraggy Moo is such a fun and talented person, and children are going to love getting involved.”
Each year, Great Big Green Week has a theme and this year it is ‘swaps’ – so the focus will be looking at what environmental swaps people can make to help create a safer and greener future.
Brad Worley, BID Manager for St Peters Quarter BID, said: “The week will kick start ‘green’ activities with businesses, over the next few weeks we will be having tidy and planting sessions with businesses in the St Peters Quarter, and we will be celebrating Meat Free Mondays to promote vegan and vegetarian food available across the BID area.
“We also plan to shine a spotlight on and celebrate businesses, like coffee shops who will be offering discounts for using your own cup and banks who will be encouraging customers to go ‘paperless’.”
