For many, golf’s main appeal is the fact that you get to whack a ball around all day long. But for others, it goes deeper.

But what is it about this sport that is so alluring to some individuals? What makes it worth giving up entire weekends to pursue?

That’s the topic of this article. We look at how golf became such a massive phenomenon and why people of all ages, incomes, and genders pursue it.

It’s Mental Escape

Why do the rich and famous flock to golf courses every weekend? It’s not because they’re necessarily concerned about their swing. Instead, it has more to do with the escape it offers.

Golf brings two elements to a peaceful mind: concentration and beauty.

Concentration comes from the fact that golfers are always trying to make the next shot. They really care about where the ball lands because it affects golf scoring.

Beauty comes from the courses themselves. Many are set in stunning natural scenery with verdant green fairways snaking their way through the countryside.

For example, places like Scotland and Portugal have golf courses overlooking the coast. Golfers can look out onto the Atlantic Ocean and instantly feel at peace.

It’s Challenging

Another reason people become obsessed with golf is the challenge it presents. The sport isn’t easy. It requires you to have your wits about you.

Golf is unique in that you have plenty of time to make your next shot. In that sense, it’s like an advanced version of croquet. Each player takes their time to consider their strategy before they tee off or attempt a putt. When it goes right, it can be incredibly rewarding, simply because of the challenge involved in doing it successfully.

For some people, this challenge is downright addictive. Many individuals just can’t get enough of specific greens or holes, returning to them repeatedly to improve their scores.

It’s A Team Sport

Another interesting aspect of golf that makes people go crazy is the fact it’s a team sport. Sure, you play alone. But you always have others beside you offering support and competition and helping you conquer the final hole.

It’s All About The Perfect Shot

For many, golf is also about making the perfect shot. Finally getting it right can be a thrilling experience.

Again, this comes back to the challenge. It’s hard to derive real satisfaction from something that’s easy. It’s much easier to do it from something that’s hard.

That’s why golf has been so successful. It’s a challenging sport but it’s also one that feels so good once players get it right. Teeing off and making the green 350 yards away with trees blocking the path of the ball is a heady experience once you land it for the first time.

It’s A Lifelong Sport

Lastly, golf is a lifelong sport. You don’t need to retire. It’s something you can keep playing for years on end without ever having to stop. As long as you can swing the club, you’re good to go.
