Six life-changing charities from across the East Midlands have welcomed much needed funding after receiving a combined total of more than £24,000 from non-profit organisation Star Trust.
Star Trust, itself a charity, is able to raise money through auctions, ticket sales and generous donations from its annual fundraising ball held at Stapleford Park Hotel. Proceeds from the event are awarded to small and medium-sized charities from across the East Midlands.
Star Trust has been donating to the region’s charities for more than four years. Including this latest amount, Star Trust has donated £592,000 to 67 different charities in the region.
Among the latest half dozens were a riding stable for the disabled, a city farm and an angling organisation for the disabled.
Chairman of the Star Trust Steve Hampson said: “We are always so delighted to meet face to face with the charities who receive funding from us. This was another incredible opportunity talk to people who give their all to the charities they work for.”
Mark Hopwell, of Scropton Riding for the Disabled, which received £10,000 in funding, said: “Ranging from age five to 80+, we have more than 300 riders a week come through our centre on the Derbyshire and Staffordshire border. The funding will create a new flooring surface for our riding centre. Having improved flooring means we will be able to accommodate more riders, which is fantastic.”
Terry Moseley, from British Disabled Angling Association, said: “The £3,000 we received will provide new adapted equipment for people to learn to catch fish. This funding from Star Trust is amazing and will go directly to the people who need it.”
Melissa Blythe, of Cornwater Evergreens, which received £3,500, added: “We are a charity that works with older people to combat loneliness and isolation. We are going to use these funds to support our food project – which is all about showing older people how to cook for health and wellbeing.”
The selected charities received cheques at a presentation, which was captured by photographers at a special handover that took place at luxury car showroom, Aston Martin, in Nottingham.
Heather Slater, of Stonebridge City Farm, which received £5,000 in funding, said: “We are delighted to win the funding. We will use it for training 140 volunteers who work with us every week. Many of these volunteers have a learning disability or mental health problem. The training we can now give them will help them with their self-confidence and help them in their work across our café, barn, and gardens.”
