11 tips for becoming a better manager

Not everyone sets out to become a manager, but if you work hard and work your way up the ladder, that might just be where you end up. While you’ll have been given that position because you have shown that you’re capable of handling the responsibility of the job, it’s not as if you can expect to be the perfect manager from day one. It takes time. In this blog, we’re going to take a look at a few things you can do that’ll nudge you in the right direction.

Understand Your Staff

You’re not leading a team of robots (at least not yet); you’re managing a bunch of humans, all of whom have different ambitions, motivating forces, and so on. As such, one of the best ways to improve your management style is to think about your team of employees and get to understand them better. While there will be some management traits that you use with all people, you’ll need to be adaptable, so that you can meet the needs of your employees. Looking at the whole person, rather than just what their specific role is, will go a long way.

Hire Better

Of course, there’s no denying that there are some people who will be easier to manage than others. It’s much more straightforward when you’re trying to manage a person who is a natural fit for their position and the company as a whole. While you’ll need to deal with the team of employees that you have at your disposal right now, you can make things easier on yourself by improving your hiring process so that you end up with better employees next time around. One way to do this is to look beyond a potential employee’s qualifications and experience, and think about how they’ll fit in with your management style. Things will run much more smoothly if they’re predisposed to respond to your type of leadership.

Inspire and Motivate

A good employee will already be inspired and motivated to do their job to the best of their ability. But it’s also true that everyone needs a lift from time to time. You can’t expect employees to always bring their A-game. When they’re beginning to feel a little jaded, it’ll be up to pick them up. Of course, you can’t just bring out the inspiration when you notice that things are beginning to dip a little. It’s much better to cultivate an inspiring and motivating environment in the workplace. This can involve creating a light and pleasant office, giving encouragement and praise (and constructive criticism) as and when it’s merited, and offering incentives. Some managers still think that an employee’s salary is enough; that’ll get you a decent standard of work, but might not be enough to inspire your team to really push themselves.

Find Your Leadership Style

The best leaders don’t just do whatever they feel is right in a particular moment. They take the time to develop their leadership style. This will give them a framework to handle whatever situation comes their way. Finding your leadership style does take time, for sure, but it’s worthwhile figuring it out. It’s best to pick a style that’s already in line with your personality, since that’ll make everything seem more natural.

Improve Your Communication Skills

It’s all good and well having a leadership style, or understanding the type of message you want to relay to your employees. But it’ll count for little if you’re not able to communicate those messages to your team. If you’ve thus far built your career on your expertise in one particular area, then you may not have the level of communication skills needed to really manage a team well. One of the most damaging things in the workplace are assumptions. A manager can assume that an employee knows what’s expected of them, but this isn’t always the case. Learn to communicate your message well, and there’ll be much less confusion. It’s also important to remember that communication isn’t just a one way street — as well as improving your verbal skills, it’s also important to improve your listening skills.

Get The Tools

You’ll have a lot of responsibilities and duties as a manager, and sometimes, the sheer number can begin to feel a little overwhelming. The issue is that when you have too much on your plate, something has to give. You might be less willing to listen to the thoughts and suggestions of your staff when you’re too busy with other tasks. As such, it’s recommended that you get the tools that will make running the workplace all the more straightforward. There are plenty of software applications available that’ll help. Things like the best time card calculators for managers can free up a lot of your time (and reduce stress), and can give you the peace of mind that one of the essential tasks involved in management has been taken care of. Ultimately, the easier that you make management for yourself, the better you’ll be able to lead your employees.

Consider Taking a Course

As we mentioned above, you’re going to have some skills that help to make you a good manager, but you’re not going to have all of them. There’ll be gaps that need to be filled. One smart way to do this is to take a course. There are plenty of management courses available that can help you to top up your skills. It’s especially recommended that you take a course early on in your management career, since you’ll learn some of the essentials that can help to prevent you from making a mistake later on down the line.

Have Empathy

It sounds obvious, but remember that your staff are human beings, not robots. If a member of your staff comes at you with a problem, listen to them, and act appropriately. Doing otherwise might win you that specific battle, but it’s only going to lose you the war.

Look After Yourself

Everyone has ‘bad manager’ stories. The thing is, it’s not as those managers were bad people or didn’t know what they were doing. More often than not, it was just because they were in a highly stressful position, and felt it. While you can’t always prevent stressful situations from arising, you can control how you respond to them. If you look after yourself, then you’ll find that it’s much easier to navigate all the stresses and strains of management. Try to build in meditation, exercise, healthy eating, a good night’s sleep into your lifestyle. There will still be stressful days, but you’ll find that you’re able to manage them much better.

Adjust Your Style

While you might have one overall management style, it’s important to remember that there’ll be times when you need to adjust. It’ll be a test of your experience to know which management style is needed and when. Different times call for different needs.

Carry on Learning

Finally, it’s important to remember that becoming a better manager is a lifelong task. One thing you’ll notice about the world’s best leaders is that they were continually committed to improvement. It doesn’t matter whether you’ve been in a management position for six months of twenty years; there will always be things you can learn that’ll make you better tomorrow than you are today. There are two approaches: one is to think you know everything, the other is that you don’t. Take the latter mindset, and you’ll have the right attitude that you need to continue improving.
