Worcester-based tool manufacturer takes penguins under its wing

L-R: Richard Smith, European Group Managing Director at Yamazaki Mazak UK Ltd with Sara Matthews, Business Development Manager at St Richard’s Hospice.

A global machine tool manufacturer, which has made Worcester home to its European manufacturing plant, is the latest local employer to sign-up to support a city arts festival next summer.

Yamazaki Mazak UK Ltd is to sponsor one of 80 penguin sculptures – large and small – which will bring colour to Worcester’s streets and public spaces from 22 July.  At the end of the eight-week art trail, each large penguin will be auctioned to raise funds for St Richard’s Hospice.

The event builds on two hugely successful previous trails which saw giraffe and elephant sculptures displayed across the city before raising more than £700,000 combined for the county charity.

Sara Matthews, Business Development Manager for St Richard’s, said: “We’re delighted Mazak are joining us once again after sponsoring the amazing Strawberryphant in 2021.  As one of the city’s proud employers, we can’t wait for Worcester to meet the Mazak penguin.”

Mr Richard Smith, European Group Managing Director, Yamazaki Mazak UK Ltd, commented: “Worcester’s Big Parade brought the whole city together in 2018 so we’re excited to play our part again next summer and, in turn, support the care that St Richard’s Hospice provides locally.

“Many happy memories will be created as local people waddle in Worcester and our team will be there, enjoying the trail with family and friends.”

The great Waddle of Worcester is supported by Presenting Partners; Crowngate, DRPG, Worcester City Council and Worcestershire Ambassadors, Community and Education Partner; Worcester BID and Media Partners; the Worcester News and BBC Hereford & Worcester.

A couple of large penguins are still available for sponsorship. To get involved call Sara Matthews, Business Development Manager, on 01905 763963, or email [email protected].
