Fit-out and refurbishment specialist contractor, Willmott Dixon Interiors, has handed over the new Urology Investigation and Treatment Centre at Princess Royal Hospital on behalf of University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust (UHSussex).
The £7.5 million project has created a new modular structure in Haywards Heath, which will improve services and significantly increase the department’s capacity.
Willmott Dixon Interiors has added 250 sq m to an existing facility through the delivery of modular units which form the new building’s superstructure.
An internal fit out has delivered specialist facilities including ultrasound, laser treatment, cystoscopy and consultancy rooms, as well as a new reception. There are also several new amenities for NHS staff, with separate nurse stations, storage areas, modern open plan office space and training facilities.
Externally a safe pedestrian route has been installed around the perimeter of the hospital, with way-finding and landscaping.
The project was made possible through the demolition and strip out of an existing day surgery unit which saw the replacement of redundant services and a completely new M&E arrangement, including a new plant deck and plant installations. It was awarded via Procurement Hub.

“We know that modern methods of construction can be hugely beneficial to our customers. By creating the superstructure of the building offsite, we’ve been able to significantly reduce the impact of our presence on site, with minimal disruption for hospital staff and patients. With a far lower volume of waste, this modular build has also delivered tangible sustainability benefits too.”
James Millar, Deputy Director of Capital Development and Property at UHSussex, said: “The new Urology Investigation and Treatment Centre at Princess Royal Hospital has created the extra space needed to manage patient care efficiently. We expect it to be able to accommodate an additional 2,800 patients per year, which is a significant increase on the previous capacity. The department will also be increasing the size of its clinical team to make sure as many patients as possible can benefit from these improvements.”

Willmott Dixon Interiors has successfully delivered several recent construction projects on behalf of UHSussex. They include the new Urgent Treatment Centre and Thomas Kemp Tower Link Bridges at Royal Sussex County Hospital, as well as a new state-of-the-art children’s audiology testing centre at the Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital in Brighton.
