What to do before moving abroad

If you’re planning to relocate overseas, then you’ll want to make sure that you’ve done all of the appropriate preparation and groundwork.

There are several hoops you’ll need to jump through, which will variously ensure that you’ve fulfilled all of the legal requirements and that your life in your new home gets off to the smoothest possible start.

Sort the visa

If you haven’t successfully applied for the appropriate visa, then you might not be given the right to live in your chosen country.

Make sure you can afford it

The cost of living will vary from country to country, often considerably. If you can’t make ends meet while you’re out there, then you’ll be in trouble. Research the cost of living, and make sure that you have a reserve of cash that you can use to absorb any bumps in the road.

House your pets

If you’re going to be taking pets with you, then you’ll want to make arrangements for their transportation. This is especially important if you’re going to be flying, and your pets are going to be travelling separately from you.

Decluttering

It might seem daunting at first but a good declutter will help you see the light at the end of the packing tunnel. When shipping your belongings from the UK to the USA for example, you might need to take less than you imagined. Don’t forget you can always purchase items once you get there. The less stuff you have to take with you, the easier you’ll find it to move. Go through all of your possessions, and make sure that you’ve thoroughly decluttered before you travel.

Sort your tax affairs

If you have outstanding tax to pay in the UK, then you’ll need to make sure it’s dealt with. Similarly, you’ll want to be aware of your liabilities in your new home country.

Sort out your banking

You’ll need to inform your existing bank of your intentions and open new accounts in your new country.

Review your expenses

You’ll need to know exactly how you’re going to pay all of your new bills. That might mean getting all your bills down, so that you can weed out anything you don’t really need anymore.

Purchase travel insurance

All kinds of circumstances can unfold when you’re moving from one country to another. You can guard yourself against risk with the help of the right kind of insurance.

Visit the doctor

You’ll need to move your medical affairs from one country to the next. That typically means getting hold of enough of any drugs you need to see you through the first few weeks and months. Obtain the relevant prescriptions.

Deal with mail

You don’t want any correspondence to continue to your old house. Talk to the post office about forwarding your post to your address overseas. This might involve paying a little extra. You should make sure that every person or organisation that sends you regular mail is informed of your new change of address.
