Surrey animal hospital uses groundbreaking treatment to cure dog’s back pain

Eleven-year-old Gus now has an excellent quality of life following pioneering treatment by the industry-leading interventional pain management clinic at Linnaeus-owned North Downs Specialist Referrals in Surrey

A pioneering Surrey animal hospital has used groundbreaking interventional pain management to successfully treat a dog suffering from chronic and severe back pain.

Eleven-year-old Gus, a Miniature Schnauzer, was admitted to Linnaeus-owned North Downs Specialist Referrals (NDSR) in Bletchingley around two months after the onset of a severe pain related to his lumbosacral intervertebral disc disease (a spinal disorder), which had not responded to pain relief medication.

Thankfully for Gus, the team at NDSR’s industry-leading interventional pain management clinic was able to

perform a minimally invasive interventional analgesic procedure, delivering potent anti-inflammatories and pain-relieving medications in the areas causing him pain. Gus was discharged the same day without any complications.

Roger Medina-Serra, veterinary specialist in anaesthesia and analgesia at NDSR, said: “The procedure not only provided significant pain relief for Gus but also broke the vicious cycle of self-perpetuating chronic pain and allowed us to discontinue all of his oral pain medication.”

Gus’ grateful owner, who lives near Sevenoaks, said the treatment has proved transformational for her beloved pet, who is once again enjoying a fine quality of life.

She said: “We didn’t know what triggered this episode but following an initial examination by our local vet, we were aware that he had some problems with his discs. An MRI performed at NDSR revealed that he had bulging discs in three places.

“We were obviously extremely concerned and worried about what the future might hold for Gus.

“However, the team at NDSR did a very thorough examination of Gus, explaining what they were doing as they did so, and also explained the treatment.

“Following the procedure, Gus no longer appears to be in discomfort with his back, and his quality of life is excellent, bearing in mind that he is now eleven-years-old and beginning to slow down a little.”

Gerry Polton, hospital director at NDSR, said: “All of this was achieved without surgery. So, there was no protracted recovery period, no risk of surgical complications and worsening of his pain.

“It’s remarkable that Gus has remained pain free after just one single treatment, this exceeds even our expectations.”

NDSR offers specialist-led services in anaesthesia and analgesia, cardiology, dentistry, dermatology, diagnostic imaging, internal medicine, neurology, oncology, ophthalmology, orthopaedics, soft tissue surgery and spinal surgery.
