Supply chain: What we should expect to see in 2022

SalesBeat is an AI driven platform that uses micro and macro factors to model consumer buying behaviour and makes predictive recommendations of optimal order volumes for FMCG salespeople to discuss with customers, ensuring 100% availability of brands in store, without any overstocking. We asked the Founder, Veena Giridhar, to share some predictions about the future of the supply chain crisis in 2022.

“Supply chain constraints are likely to take a different form in 2022. While 2021 has been a combination of raw material shortages, manpower constraints due to covid restrictions and logistics constraints due to lack of HGV drivers, 2022 will be characterised primarily by raw material constraints. However, the supply chain crisis is expected to peak in the remainder of 2021 before it eases into 2022.”, says Veena

“Both supermarkets and suppliers have realised that this is not the time for just in time production and ordering. Where retailers relied heavily on a fixed delivery system with suppliers pre 2020 for all orders, they have realised that logistics can become a constraint and disrupt these timelines. Retailers have started responding to these disruptions by ensuring they place larger orders and hold more stock in their depots, and companies have started producing and holding more stock in their warehouses. This is now putting pressure on raw material suppliers. 2022 for suppliers will be characterised by risk management where procurement teams will be tasked with finding, vetting and setting up as many different suppliers for the same raw material as possible to minimise risks around shortages”, she adds.
