Stride out over Malvern Hills for hospice

Walkers are invited to stride out across the Malvern Hills for a hospice’s 38th annual fundraising challenge.

The St Richard’s Hospice Malvern Hills Walk takes place on Saturday, May 14 – with two, five and 11-mile routes available.

The walk is a popular fixture in the hospice’s calendar – and this year returns as a mass-participation event for the first time since the start of the pandemic.

Sofia Gunster, Fundraiser at St Richard’s, said: “Due to pandemic restrictions, this event has been held virtually in recent years – with walkers taking on the challenge individually on a date to suit them.

“While this worked well, and raised fantastic amounts for our care, we are really looking forward to seeing everyone together on the same date again.

“There’s sure to be a great atmosphere on the day, and we’ll be cheering everyone on as they go!

“There are family-friendly routes available or a more challenging 11-mile hike across the length of the Malverns.

“This is a great event to take part in, and a fantastic way to enjoy the beautiful, rolling hills.”

Both the two and five-mile walks are circular, starting from 10am at Black Hill Car Park. Admin fee is £10 for adults and £5 for under 16s.

The 11-mile walk will see participants trek the length of the hills from Chase End. Those taking on this route will receive a pair of luxury bamboo walking socks for finishing, donated by BAM – Bamboo Clothing.

Everyone walking the 11-mile route will be transported to the start by coach, leaving from North Quarry Car Park at 7.30am. Admin fee is £15 for adults and £10 for under 16s.

The hospice asks everyone taking part to pledge to raise £50 or more in sponsorship. Anyone who raises more than £75 will receive a free St Richard’s Hospice t-shirt to wear on the day.

The Malvern Hills Walk is sponsored by Speller Metcalfe.

St Richard’s Hospice cares for adults with a serious progressive illness, improving their quality of life from diagnosis, during treatment and to their last days. It also supports their loved ones.

Each year the hospice team supports more than 2,900 patients, family members and bereaved people in Worcestershire.

It costs £8.75m to run the hospice (20/21 audited accounts), which includes patient care and all the necessary support services.

St Richard’s is an independent charity and relies on donations and gifts in Wills for the majority of its income with the remainder funded by the NHS.
