Award-winning housebuilder William Davis Homes welcomed a special visitor as part of National Apprenticeship Week (5th – 11th Feb).

Lesley Giles is a Governor at Leicester College and met apprentices from a range of trades including bricklaying, plumbing and joinery.

During Lesley’s visit to the Lace Fields development at Ruddington, she met apprentice bricklayers Mia Evans-Scriven and Keane Clarke, who are both 17, and their mentor Dave King.

Mia described how she had spent two days on work experience with William Davis Homes before applying for the apprenticeship. “I started six months ago and the time has just flown by,” said Mia. “I’m really enjoying it and feel part of the team already.”

Plumbing and heating apprentice Ferdie Smith (18) said he had joined William Davis after visiting the company’s information desk at a careers fair at Leicester College and applied for the apprenticeship. Lesley also met Ferdie’s mentor Graeme Gordon as the pair worked in the kitchen of one of the houses.

The site manager at Lace Fields, Oliver Robinson, also introduced Lesley to apprentice joiner Jake Smith (19) and his mentor Michael Knight.

“It was really good to see the apprentices getting on well and enjoying what they’re doing,” said Lesley. “They were very enthusiastic and that’s great to see at first-hand during a visit like this.”

William Davis Homes has a long-standing partnership with Leicester College to provide apprenticeships through a range of courses. The company’s award-winning apprenticeship scheme has been running for more than 50 years.

The traditional training scheme gives the opportunity to ‘earn and learn’ while gaining a professional qualification and creating a life-long career. A large proportion of the current workforce started as William Davis Homes apprentices.
