Dedicated environmentalist Sam Winterflood will be talking to families about how to minimise plastic in their lives at Shrewsbury’s first ‘free-from’ festival.
The 27-year-old recently opened the Green Options Zero-Waste store in Shrewsbury’s Darwin Centre with his business partner Lillie Lockwood.
And Sam will be at Frestival in Shrewsbury on Saturday (May 18) to talk about the single-use plastic free movement nationally and how this offers choice and variety to the customer without the food additives normally found in packaged goods.
He joins an exciting array of speakers, chefs, traders and entertainment at the event, which will take place at the Greenhous West Midlands Showground from 10am.
Organisers of the event are aiming to offer information, guidance and tips on free-from lifestyles, as well as a traders village offering free-from food and products.
Organiser Ian Bebbington said he was delighted to welcome Sam to Frestival.
He said: “Reducing plastic in our lives is something we all need to do but it’s often hard to know where to start when it is so prevalent in our daily lives, from supermarket packaging to shampoo bottles to water bottles.
“We all need to start somewhere and Sam is going to offer us much-needed tips to make a difference.”
The Green Options Zero-Waste store, which opened at the beginning of April, encourages people to bring their own containers to buy items from the shop.
Sam, who previously worked in recycling and waste management in the UK and abroad,said: “Our aim is to education and inform in environmental matters and seek to reduce plastic waste whilst working with passionate and if possible local suppliers.
“We want to reduce single use plastic waste and raise environmental awareness. We offer an alternative shopping style minimizing waste, whilst offering greater choice and range to the public with a range of dried foodstuffs and multi-use items.”
Sam said he wanted to get involved in Frestival to raise awareness of single use plastics and alternatives whilst generating fresh enthusiasm and energy.
He will be telling people about the changes people can make to stop using plastic in their daily lives.
He added: “There’s a wide range of choices you can make to minimize plastic, from using wax wraps instead of cling-film, to toothpaste in reusable glass jars and nail brushes made from beech wood and cactus fiber.
“Our whole shop offers hundreds of products without the plastic wrapping/design normally found in standard products.”
