ROAD TEST – Hyundai i10N

Hyundai i10 – 2023

By Ian Strachan.

The smart-looking Hyundai i10 might not be an obvious first choice for someone looking for a small car. Which is a shame, because Hyundai’s baby is certainly worth looking at.

I test drove the sprightly i10 N Line, which is a stylish, well specified, pleasant-to-drive little car with all the extras you’d expect on something much bigger. It certainly looks the part. In striking pearl paint, with 16″ grey alloys, rear spoiler and black roof, this car looks good.

The i10 N Line has a crisp, character-full  profile, and performs well. Powered by a three-cylinder 1.0 litre 100bhp petrol engine, it’s brisk, peppy, and unfussed.  Linked to a five-speed manual gearbox the engine responds extremely well.

The car handles nicely and feels exceptionally sure footed. In fact the overall ride and handling of this vehicle is very impressive indeed despite a fairly firm suspension set-up.

You get plenty of extras on the i10 N Line that many manufacturers would charge you extra for, including  heated front seats and steering wheel, automatic climate control and cruise control. You also get rear parking sensors with camera and a good sound system with steering wheel mounted controls. The four-speaker sound system, with Bluetooth and Apple CarPlay,  is controlled via an eight-inch touchscreen.

The interior is of a very high quality for a smallish car, with comfortable seats for rear passengers and adequate leg and head room. The boot is respectable for a small car and can be increased by folding the 60/40 split rear seats.

The whole car has a solid, quality feel with high body rigidity and good use of materials.

The Hyundai i10 N Line 1.0T 100PS has an on the road price of £18,020. Pearl body colours cost an extra £550.

This is a very impressive small car that will certainly give more established  cars a run for their money, particularly among drivers who are not marque-obsessed. And there’s a five year unlimited mileage warranty to go with it
