ROAD TEST – Audi A4 Avant Sport Edition 40 TFSI

Audi A4 Avant – 2023

By Ian Strachan.

The Sport Edition Audi A4 Avant is a real smoothie. Smooth good looks, smooth ride and handling, and smooth power delivery, with practicality that doesn’t detract from its sporty appeal.

And it’s big – longer and wider than many of its competitors with an impressive 1495 litres of loadspace.

I drove the  2.0 litre 40 TFSI 204 bhp petrol version, with a smooth, direct injection engine which can return 43.5 miles to the gallon in mixed driving, despite being quite a big car.

This easy-revving engine will take you from 0-60 in just over seven seconds. Married to an ultra smooth seven-speed automatic gearbox it gives excellent sporty performance when you want it, and a smooth and sedate ride on long journeys.

Ride and handling are both refined and composed, with sure-footed cornering, even at speed.

Inside, the A4 Avant is roomy in the extreme, particularly in the back. Controls are well laid out and clear, with a display screen which shows navigation, sound system and climate control settings. The heated leather sports seats are supremely comfortable.

Loadspace is as impressive as the interior of this roomy car, with a low loading sill and little wheel arch intrusion. The tailgate is powered.

Standard equipment includes cruise control with speed limiter, parking system with front and rear sensors and camera, touchscreen satnav and an excellent 3D sound system with DAB digital radio, smartphone and Bluetooth interfaces, automatic light and wiper activation, automatic three-zone climate control and electrically operated and heated door mirrors.

You also get 18-inch 10-spoke alloys, distance sensors, roof rails, privacy glass, LED interior lighting and a leather multi-function steering wheel .

The Audi A4 Avant Sport Edition 40 TFSI automatic comes at £40,840. Metallic paint adds £675 to that.

This is an excellent, high performing car that is both practical and comfortable and will look good on your drive.
